DRISHTI BLIND GIRLS SCHOOL

For the educational rehabilitation of visually impaired girls, Drishti opened a residential school 'Drishti Netraheen Balika Vidyalaya' in 2004. Starting from merely 2 students, it has now grown to sheltering and educating more than 100 students. Approximately the same number of girls are also pursuing further education in universities pan-India.

A survey was conducted by the All India Confederation of the blind, Delhi and the local Gramodaya Vishwavidyalaya. The findings of the survey proved that the number of visually impaired people in the rural areas of the Chitrakoot district was extremely high. Even though we were able to admit 7 blind girls to schools located in other states, the girls' parents were not comfortable in sending their daughters away. For this reason, after talking to some social workers associated with Drishti, we started the work of establishing a residential school here.

In the school, we provide education from grades 1-8. After that, students are sent to normal schools for further education till grade 12. Residential arrangements are all done by Drishti, where they are given nutritional food with favorable and comfortable living arrangements. School dress, infirmary and sports and entertainment facilities are also provided here completely for free.

The medium of school education has been kept in Braille, a language that enables visually impaired people to read. To ensure that the kids are able to cope up with society outside the blind school, we also ensure to keep literary material in other languages too.

Seeing how the world is progressing and how important technological knowledge has become, Drishti has also introduced a coding program for the visually impaired girls. In this program, they are taught the importance of coding in today’s world and the basics of the ‘python’ programming language. Learning coding has become essential for every child now, not only because of its several applications but also because of how it develops one's logical thinking skills. Hence, here at Drishti, to ensure that our students our given a holistic education, our technological head, Ms. Nysa Garg, has authored a book on coding. The book is specifically written for visually impaired kids, using simple language and examples the kids can resonate with.

To inculcate logical thinking skills, we also use educational toys like braille scrabble and Rubik's cubes in our curriculum, which makes learning more enjoyable for the students.

To ensure that our kids receive a holistic education, we do several activities such as organizing all national, social and religious festivals. Apart from this, students are also given several opportunities to take part in competitions and flaunt their skills in front of the world.

To ensure that our kids too can stand shoulder to shoulder with the other sighted kids outside our facility, we also provide them with computer operational training. The faculty also keeps on updating their teaching methods to keep up with the requirements of the child and what the world expects.

This school proved to be a boon for girls in this area. After listening to the great reviews, parents from states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh have also enrolled their daughters in our school.
